Getting to Rishikesh: Airport, Visa & What to Pack

Everything you need to plan your trip to Arya Yog Peeth in Ram Jhula, Rishikesh — from booking flights to what belongs in your bag.

Flying In

The closest airport is Dehradun Jolly Grant Airport (DED), about 20 km from Rishikesh — a 45-minute taxi ride to our ashram in Ram Jhula. Daily flights connect Dehradun with Delhi and other major Indian cities.

Flying long-haul? Most international students land at Delhi Indira Gandhi International (DEL), then either take a short connecting flight to Dehradun or travel by road (around 5-7 hours). We can arrange airport pickup from either airport on request — share your flight details after booking.

By Train or Road

Trains from Delhi run to Haridwar Junction (about one hour from Rishikesh by taxi) and to Yog Nagari Rishikesh station. Comfortable options include the Shatabdi and Vande Bharat services to Haridwar. By road, buses and private taxis run from Delhi throughout the day. From anywhere in Rishikesh, ask for Ram Jhula, Swargashram — the ashram is near Bhootnath Temple.

Visa

Most nationalities can apply online for an Indian e-Tourist Visa — apply a few weeks before travel on the official government portal (indianvisaonline.gov.in) and carry a printed copy. A standard tourist visa comfortably covers a 28-day teacher training or a 10-day retreat. Requirements vary by nationality, so check the current rules for your passport before booking flights.

Best Time of Year

September to April is the sweet spot. Autumn (September-November) and spring (February-April) bring sunny days of 20-30°C with cool, fresh nights. Winter (December-January) is clear and crisp — pack warm layers for sunrise practice. The monsoon (July-August) turns the valley intensely green, with regular rain and 25-33°C.

What to Pack

  • • Comfortable yoga clothing (modest, breathable)
  • • Warm layers for early mornings (Oct-Mar)
  • • A shawl or wrap for meditation and temple visits
  • • Sandals plus walking shoes for excursions
  • • Reusable water bottle
  • • Sunscreen, hat, and insect repellent
  • • Any personal medication + basic first aid
  • • Travel insurance documents (strongly recommended)
  • • Universal power adapter (India uses type C/D/M plugs)
  • • Yoga mats and props are provided — no need to carry yours

Money, SIM & Practicalities

ATMs are available in Rishikesh, and cards work in bigger shops — but keep some cash (Indian rupees) for markets, taxis, and chai. An Indian SIM (Jio or Airtel) from the airport is the easiest way to stay connected; the ashram also has free Wi-Fi. Rishikesh is a holy town: it is fully vegetarian and alcohol-free, which makes it a naturally supportive place for your practice.
